On Friday, visited the University of New Haven to introduce legislation that would expand income-driven student loan repayment options.

The Savings Opportunity and Affordable Repayment (SOAR) Act is meant to protect student loan borrowers from unaffordable payment schedules.

“I believe education is the pathway to the American dream,” Congresswoman DeLauro said. “The SOAR Act puts borrowers first, creating a clear path of getting out of debt and starting to build wealth.”

DeLauro was joined by University leaders and local advocates to make the announcement.

President Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D., said that the University is a higher-education destination for first-generation students and working-class families, and he remarked on how the world our graduates are entering is faster-paced and more complex than ever.

“In four short years, they must develop academic, professional, social, global and durable skills that position them for lasting success,” Frederiksen said.

He added that the vast majority of our students do utilize financial assistance.

“They borrow, invest in their future, and take that obligation seriously,” Frederiksen said. “These students are living proof that it is not where you start, but where you finish. Providing flexible student loan repayment options supports our students, strengthens the economy, and builds the elite global workforce of the future.”

The SOAR Act is currently under review by lawmakers.
