New year, new me (last semester)
Hello, fellow earthlings, and welcome to the last semester of the Ā鶹AV Blog, as written by Beatrice Glaviano ā26.
For those who may be joining us for the first time, hiā Iām Bea. I have four shots of espresso in my system and three hours of sleep for today. Donāt worryā this is normal. Iām a nutrition sciences student here at the University of New Haven, and for the past three years Iāve been one of the authors of the Ā鶹AV Blog. Iāve done research, melted fish (Dad lore), did some crazy ambulance stuff, and, somehow along the way, managed to become a senior in college.
Which, I have to ask: who on earth decided it was a good idea to let me go to college?
Instead of being just a menace to society, Iām now an educated menace, which is wayyyyyyyy worse. For those who havenāt met me, imagine, like, the Doc Ock from the first āInto the Spider-Verseā movie. Then multiply that by ten and decrease the budget by about 85%. Boom. Thatās me.
Nerd in a trench coat, neighborhood disaster, and poor college student. Oh yeah.
In case you didnāt think I was nerdy enough, Iām now one of the Learning Assistants (LAs) for Anatomy & Physiology II! Iām really excited for it, even if it means that I need to re-learn some of the material as the course progresses. For this course in particular, Iām hoping to bring my experiences as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) into the class to make the course as immersive as possible.
So, to all my future students: buckle up and be ready for pure, unbridled EMS insanity with plenty of sarcastic dark humor. I promise I won't bite.
Outside of school, I really want to use this semester to find myself again and enjoy life. On New Yearās Eve, I found myself sitting alone in a restaurant with a bottle of wine and some of the best food in my life. Iād never been alone on NYE before, but, for the first time in a long time, I enjoyed the peace. I donāt know how, but the music that they played made me suspicious that they looked through my personal playlist. So, between sips of wine, bold ragu, and light humor from the servers, I came to the realization that life isnāt that serious.
Itās just not.
This year, I want to flow through the world. Eat new things. Lift heavy. Go places I havenāt been yet, and embrace the decisions that follow that. I want to pour my heart and soul into things instead of just giving them superficial attention. I would like to get back into art, haunting my favorite coffee places, and maybe making my own bagels for the first time.
In terms of the blog, I really want to get to know people more. Whether it be professors, students, or even members of our University police department, I want to get out into the world. Maybe the spirit of Anthony Bourdain is possessing me, but I wouldnāt have it any other way. Even if not for this little blog of mine, getting to know new people of all backgrounds is something that excites me.
Iām excited to be genuine. To try for people. To become better for those who have not received the best version of myself.
Man, I love the New Year. When the clock hit midnight that night, something magical happened. Iām not sure what, but I hope itās the Universe telling me that she has my best interests in mind. While my background is Roman Catholic, I also believe that the world has more than just the Holy Trinity. Iāll be meditating with my crystals and tarot cards.
I hope that you all have enjoyed this article, and if you see me on campus, feel more than free to say hello!
Wishing you all a wonderful start to your semester, and for the graduating seniors, godspeed. We can do this.
With lots of peace, love, and peanut butter, your friend,
Beatrice
